Federico Zanellato | Noosa Eat and Drink

Federico Zanellato

Fusing Japanese and Italian and stirring up Sydney.

With Italian roots and a love of Japanese cuisine, Italian chef Federico Zanellato has stirred the Sydney dining scene by fusing two distinct food cultures with his 2014 opening of LuMi Bar and Dining on Sydney Harbor.

Leaving his home town in Italy Zanellato spent his early career working in top European restaurants and training at Ryugin in Tokyo, before he eventually made Australia home.

Ticking off time in the world-famous kitchens at Noma and Attica, Zanellato proved his innovation and creativity during his four years at the helm of Ormeggio at the Spit – securing two Chef Hats by SMH Good Food Guide.

The opening of LuMi, that Zanellato runs with wife and sommelier Michela Boncagni, saw a new era of Italian degustation eating. Breaking all the rules in Italian eating with LuMi’s distinctive Japanese aesthetic, the glass-fronted, fine-dining restaurant has been awarded with two Chefs Hats and sat at number 19 in the 2016 Australian Financial Review’s Australian Top 100 Restaurants.

With rumours of a second, more casual, dining space to be launched in 2018 and holding the 2017 Citi Chef of The Year by SMH Good Food Guide, Federico Zanellato is a chef on the way up.
